LASER NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS 2013 COMPLETED

By Mike On January 21, 2013 · Leave a Comment · In news

The Championship has been completed and judged to be a great success.  The first day was abysmal with almost no wind and what there was boxed the compass.   The Race Officer, Gerald Martin, sent the sailors home late afternoon after only one race out of 10 scheduled had been completed.  Next day was as different as possible with 18 starts scheduled to catch up on the programme.  This time the wind varied from zero to 30+ knots every which way with a drop in temperature to the low teens and several squalls of heavy rain.  The last sailors came ashore at 7:30pm, cold and tired, but willy-nilly 16 races had been completed.

The third day proved to be a perfect Hawke’s Bay day with sun, blue sky and a 10 Kn sea-breeze from about 50 degrees all day.  There were good waves to catch and surf on.  Nick Page described it as “Champagne sailing”.  17 races were completed and the programme was up to schedule.

The  fourth and last day was better still with a 12-18 Kn wind steady from 110 degrees.  Racing of the last 10 races on the card started on time at noon and they were all over by 3:30pm.  Prize giving followed about an hour later followed by a barbecue.
